Mokugyos are found in various shapes and sizes. The most common design is in the shape of a fish or pair of fish (dragons), this is how the bell gets its name. The dual (dragon) fish head design often has a wisdom pearl to form the handle. In buddhism the fish, which never sleeps, symbolizes wakefulness. Therefore, it is to remind the chanting monks to concentrate on their sutra. The mokugyo creates a hollow calming tone when struck and vintage/ antique mokugyo often acquire small dents from the mallet strike through the years of ritual usage which often adds to the character of the piece. The tone/sound from each mokugyo differs slightly from one another which also adds to their unique beauty. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Please check out my other items.
